Description:
The historic Mariensäule (Mary's Column) set against the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) in Marienplatz, Munich. Built by Elector Maximilian I to celebrate the end of the Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War. The top features a golden statue of the Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven, which was created earlier in 1590. Four putti (cherubs) at the base of the column fight four different evils: a lion (war), a cock (pestilence), a dragon (hunger), and a serpent (heresy)
